Description

LED Grow Light H80 Tuna Flora – Kessil

Kessil H80 Tuna Flora Grow LED lighting of top class for your refugium LED lighting designed especially for refugia, macro-algae tanks, and aquatic/semiaquatic plant growth. Rather than being a broad aquarium display light, its focus is on promoting photosynthesis, nutrient export (via macroalgae), and efficient plant/algal growth in relatively shallow or small-space refugium setups.

It uses Kessil’s Dense Matrix LED technology to provide a concentrated point light source with good uniformity, even mixing of colors, and strong penetration. It’s fanless (passive cooling) to reduce noise and maintenance.

How It Works the LED Grow Light H80 Tuna Flora

  • Spectral Modes: Four modes — Blue, Grow, Bloom, Red. These allow tuning the light spectrum depending on what stage of growth the plants or algae are in. For instance, Blue for stem/structure development or initial growth, Grow for general vegetative growth, Bloom for flowering/reproductive stages, Red for root/tissue development.

  • Spectrum Range: The LED output spans roughly 380-780 nm, which includes near-UVA and near-infrared. This broad range helps with more natural photosynthesis by covering parts of the spectrum often under-used in simpler LED fixtures.

  • Dense Matrix LED Array: Many LED chips clustered tightly under an optical lens so that light blends before exiting, reducing “hot spots” and giving smoother light, better coverage, and more penetration considering its power.

  • Passive / Fanless Cooling: The heat management is handled via the fixture’s shell and materials (aluminum or similar) rather than fans, which means quieter operation and fewer moving parts that could fail or need cleaning.

  • Manual & External Control: On-board dials allow manual adjustment of intensity and spectrum. It is also compatible with external controllers (0-10V control), and can be daisy-chained with other units for synchronized settings. Spectral controller options and adapter accessories exist.

  • Mounting Flexibility: Comes with a top mounting adapter. There are optional mini gooseneck / canopy adapters to position it where needed. Good for suspending over a refugium or mounting under a canopy.

Technical Specifications

  • Power consumption: ≈ 15 watts maximum.

  • Input: 100-240V AC, output via included power supply is 24V DC.

  • Dimensions: about 4.88 inches diameter × 0.98 inches height (≈ 12.4 cm × 2.5 cm)

  • Weight: around 0.88 lbs (~400 g)

  • Coverage: Up to ~ 24" surface diameter (≈ 60 cm) in optimal/light conditions. This means one unit can cover a circular refugium area of that diameter.

  • Included items: the LED unit itself, a DC power supply, and a top mounting adapter. Accessories like gooseneck, spectral controller, unit link cables are optional.

Strengths of LED Grow Light H80 Tuna Flora by Kessil

  • Very efficient in terms of photon output per watt given its small size and passive cooling. Very good performance for its wattage.

  • Quiet operation due to fanless design, good for enclosed or humid refugia where fans might fail or accumulate grime.

  • Flexibility in adjusting spectrum allows you to tailor light to what your plants / algae need. Helps avoid wasting energy on unnecessary wavelengths.

  • Compact and relatively easy to mount or place because of its size; good for limited space.

  • Good penetration, smooth light, minimal hot-spots, thanks to the Dense Matrix design and optics.

Things to Watch Out For

  • As it’s a relatively low-wattage unit (15W), its intensity will drop off with height and distance; if your refugium is deep, or you want very thick macroalgae biomass, one unit may not be enough.

  • Because it is essentially a point source, edge falloff may occur — the center of coverage will be brighter than outer edges. Proper positioning and possibly multiple units needed for uniformity.

  • Doesn’t include all accessories by default (e.g. gooseneck, advanced controller), which may add cost.

  • If used improperly (too close, too intense), could cause overheating of substrate or plants, or stress from too much UV/red.

  • For display lighting (fish, corals) or needs for very high brightness, you might need a stronger model or supplementary lighting. It’s optimized more for plant/algae growth than for aesthetic color rendering or coral SPS/LPS growth.

Practical Tips

  • Great for growing macroalgae (Chaetomorpha, Caulerpa) in refugium to help with nutrient export. Also good for aquatic / semi-aquatic plant tanks or paludariums.

  • Best placed at an appropriate height over the algae mat/refugium so light is not wasted and coverage is as uniform as possible.

  • Use the spectrum that matches your growth phase: for example, “Grow” for general growth, “Blue” for structure / initial growth, “Red” during root development, “Bloom” if trying to stimulate reproductive structures or flowering in aquatic plants.

  • Use acclimation if introducing new light or new plants/algae so they adjust without burning or bleaching.

  • If you have a large refugium, link multiple units via unit link cables to ensure uniform coverage.

  • Keep the light source dry (not submerged), ensure the lens is clean, keep reasonable ventilation around unit for best lifespan (even though passive cooling, heat buildup must be allowed to dissipate).

The H80 Tuna Flora is a high-quality, compact, efficient LED grow/refugium light by Kessil. It offers flexible spectrum, decent coverage for its size, quiet operation, and is excellent for growing macroalgae or plants in refugia or small/medium plant setups. It’s not going to be the brightest possible fixture out there, but in its niche it performs very well.
