Fluidized Zeolite Reactor ZA 616 – Deltec

Deltec ZA 616 Zeolite Reactor – High-Performance Filtration for Large Marine Systems

The Deltec ZA 616 Zeolite Reactor is a premium, German-engineered fluidized-bed reactor designed specifically for saltwater and reef aquariums up to 1,800 litres (approximately 475 US gallons). Using Deltec’s long experience in high-end marine filtration, the ZA 616 provides hobbyists and professionals with an efficient, automated way to reduce dissolved nutrients and organic impurities while maintaining optimum water clarity and quality for corals and other sensitive marine life.

Why Zeolite Filtration?

Zeolite is a naturally occurring porous mineral that acts like a sponge for unwanted compounds. When placed in a reactor, its micro- and mesopores adsorb ammonium, certain heavy metals, and dissolved organics, while also providing a vast surface area for beneficial nitrifying and denitrifying bacteria. By running fine-grain zeolite media (1–2 mm) inside the ZA 616, you maximize this surface area compared with coarser stones, leading to much higher adsorption efficiency and biological activity. This dual action – chemical adsorption plus biological filtration – makes zeolite reactors especially valuable on ultra-low nutrient systems (ULNS) and coral-dominated reefs where pristine water quality is critical.

Automatic Agitation – Less Work, More Control

Traditional zeolite filters require daily manual shaking or stirring of the media to release trapped detritus and keep the stones from clumping. The Deltec ZA 616 eliminates that chore. It comes with a power-adjustable DC fluidizing pump that automatically agitates the media. By connecting this pump to an external timer (not included), you can schedule multiple agitation cycles throughout the day – for example, 30 seconds every few hours – without lifting a finger. Automated agitation prevents channeling and keeps the media bed active, ensuring consistent nutrient removal and bacterial colonization.

Efficient Fluidization – Uniform Flow and No Channeling

The ZA 616’s tall, precision-molded reaction chamber and engineered flow plates guarantee uniform fluidization of the zeolite media. This design minimizes dead spots and prevents the “channeling effect” where water bypasses parts of the bed, a common problem in conventional canister-style reactors. Uniform fluidization means every grain of zeolite is actively working, giving you more performance from less media and extending the life of each charge.

Flexible Installation Options

Deltec designed the ZA 616 for maximum installation flexibility. It can be run internally inside your sump for a clean, space-saving setup or externally outside the sump if internal space is limited. Quick-disconnect fittings and a compact footprint make plumbing straightforward. This versatility allows the reactor to integrate seamlessly into both new and existing filtration systems.

Technical Specifications

  • Recommended Aquarium Size: up to 1,800 L (475 US gal)

  • Media Capacity: 4.5 kg of fine-grain zeolite (1–2 mm)

  • Required Feed Pump Flow: 900 L/h (approximately 240 gph)

  • Installation: Internal or external to the sump

  • Included: Power-adjustable DC fluidizing pump for agitation

Because of the very fine zeolite used, the ZA 616 offers a significantly larger effective surface area than typical reactors. In systems with a low nutrient load, it can even handle volumes larger than the stated rating – in some cases up to twice the recommended capacity – although Deltec advises users to start conservatively and adjust based on nutrient readings.

Maintenance and Media Replacement

For optimal performance, replace the zeolite media every 6–8 weeks depending on your system’s bioload and nutrient levels. During normal operation, monitor nitrate, phosphate, and alkalinity to ensure stable parameters. Rinse new zeolite media before use to remove dust, and adjust the flow so the bed gently tumbles rather than vigorously boiling. Proper maintenance extends the life of the pump and preserves the efficiency of the reactor.

A Professional-Grade Solution for Demanding Aquariums

With its automated agitation, high-capacity fine-grain media bed, and flexible installation options, the Deltec ZA 616 Zeolite Reactor provides serious marine hobbyists and public aquariums with a low-maintenance, high-performance nutrient export system. Whether you are running a heavily stocked reef tank, a fish-only predator system, or a coral farm requiring ultra-low nutrients, the ZA 616 delivers stable, repeatable results that help keep your livestock healthy and your water crystal clear – all with less manual labor and more control.
