Red Sea Salt contains moderately elevated and balanced levels of the foundation elements (Calcium, Magnesium, Bicarbonates) necessary for sustainable coral growth.
When combined with our reef care recipes, it will maximize pigment saturation to bring out your coral’s most vivid colors, while encouraging growth up to twice the natural rate. Red Sea Salt’s Alkalinity of 8dKH makes it ideal for all reef aquarium types, and especially SPS dominated tanks. In addition, with higher dissolvability of our new & improved formula it only takes about 20 minutes from bucket to tank, which makes your mixing routine far more convenient.
The 7 kg bucket of Red Sea Salt is a reef-grade synthetic sea salt mix designed to replicate the ideal chemistry of natural seawater for reef aquaria.
It’s intended for use in “closed marine systems” (i.e. aquariums) where you want stable and reproducible water chemistry.
When mixed properly, the 7 kg will produce about 210 liters of seawater.
Natural seawater includes over 70 elements. Most of them influence the water parameters, but only a few play a significant role in its overall chemical stability. These elements form the foundation of the reef environment and include three major elements: Calcium, Magnesium, and Bicarbonates.
Red Sea Salt is formulated to closely replicate the natural balance of elements found in tropical reef seawater. It provides all the essential foundation elements—calcium, magnesium, and carbonates—in biologically balanced ratios that support coral skeleton formation and overall marine life health. When mixed to a salinity of about 35 parts per thousand (specific gravity around 1.025), the salt typically produces an:
- alkalinity of approximately 8 dKH (or 2.9 meq/L),
- calcium levels between 420 and 440 mg/L,
- magnesium levels in the range of 1,250 to 1,300 mg/L.
- potassium is generally maintained near 380 to 400 mg/L, which is consistent with natural seawater concentrations.
In addition to these major ions, Red Sea Salt includes a full complement of trace elements required for biological processes and coral coloration, carefully balanced to prevent toxic accumulations of heavy metals. The mix contains no nitrates or phosphates, ensuring that it won’t introduce unwanted nutrients that could fuel algae growth. The product also maintains a low moisture content and contains no chemical binders, helping ensure stability, purity, and a quick dissolution rate during preparation.
The three ‘foundation elements’ have a major effect on pH stability, Alkalinity, seawater ionic strength, and many of the coral’s biological processes (skeleton formation, ion-exchange, photosynthesis).
Unlike the natural reef environment, where there is an immense reservoir of the foundation elements, the reef aquarium has limited resources that are quickly depleted by the aquarium inhabitants. Therefore, in order to enable sustainable coral growth, it is necessary to maintain higher than natural levels of the foundation elements.
Original research carried out in Red Sea’s laboratory has shown that when increasing the levels of the foundation elements above the levels found in natural sea water, in a very specific ratio , will enhance coral growth and the formation of a robust aragonite coral skeleton.
Red Sea Salt is made according to these ideal ratios, removing the need to adjust the levels of foundation elements after water changes, and providing your corals with a healthy and stable home.

Use RO/DI (reverse osmosis + deionization) water as the base for mixing to minimize impurities.
Blend in a clean container, ideally with agitation or stirring, until fully dissolved.
Allow mixing to fully stabilize (e.g. temperature, pH, salinity) before dosing into your tank.
The product literature gives recommended “dose” rates (grams per liter) based on the target parameters (for fish-only, invertebrates, corals).
Because aquaria deplete elements over time, periodic supplementation or water changes will be necessary even with a high-quality salt mix.
Limitations
While the salt aims to deliver ideal base parameters, it does not remove the need for testing (alkalinity, calcium, magnesium, trace elements) and monitoring your tank’s chemistry.
In systems with very heavy coral loading or unusual demands, additional supplementation (e.g. dosing individual elements) may still be required.
The actual performance of the salt depends on the purity of your mixing water and your handling practices (e.g. avoiding contamination, ensuring complete dissolution).
Cost per liter is relatively higher compared to bulk or lower-end salt mixes, but you pay for stability and consistency.
