Description
ReefLED G2 170 Visor – Red Sea
The ReefLED G2 170 Visor is an optional clip-on accessory designed for the ReefLED G2 170 lighting fixture from Red Sea.
Its primary function is to reduce glare and minimize light spillage (i.e. light that would otherwise escape the aquarium and shine into the room or cause reflections).
By “clipping on,” it is removable—so you can install or remove it without permanently modifying the light.
Using a visor with a powerful LED light like the ReefLED G2 170 offers several benefits:
Improved viewing comfort
The intense LED output can be harsh to the eyes (especially at close distances). The visor helps shade the direct LED emission from side angles, making it more pleasant to look at the tank.Better light control / reduced spillage
It helps “contain” more of the light within the tank, reducing wasted light that would otherwise bounce off the room walls or ceiling.Maintain coral-safe illumination
Since it’s designed for this light, it should not interfere significantly with the intended spectrum or intensity on the corals, as long as installed properly.Aesthetic / clean look
It gives a tidier appearance by hiding or masking part of the LED module’s harsh look when you’re viewing from an angle.
The ReefLED G2 170 Visor is specifically designed to be compatible with the Red Sea ReefLED G2 170 lighting unit. It functions as a clip-on accessory, easily attaching to the light fixture without the need for tools or permanent modifications. This makes installation and removal straightforward, allowing aquarists to customize their lighting setup with minimal effort.
The visor’s main purpose is to reduce glare and contain light within the aquarium, preventing excessive light from spilling into the surrounding area. It helps maintain a comfortable viewing experience while preserving the lighting performance needed for coral health and growth.
In terms of construction, the visor is made from high-quality, durable plastic that can withstand the humid and salty environment typical of marine aquariums. The material is opaque to effectively block unwanted light, yet lightweight enough not to interfere with the mounting or balance of the lighting unit.
The visor fits seamlessly onto the ReefLED G2 170, which itself measures approximately 18 × 16 × 6.4 centimeters (7 × 6.3 × 2.5 inches). It is tailored to this model’s specific dimensions and should not be used with other lighting systems. Because the G2 170 is designed to illuminate aquariums up to about 80 centimeters (32 inches) deep, the visor has been engineered to avoid restricting the light beam or altering the uniform spread of illumination.
When installed correctly, the visor does not affect the spectrum or intensity of the light within the tank. The ReefLED G2 170 is capable of producing a balanced spectrum from 10,000 K reef-white to 23,000 K deep-blue, delivering optimal PAR (Photosynthetically Active Radiation) and PUR (Photosynthetically Utilizable Radiation) for coral growth. The visor’s shape ensures that this carefully tuned output remains consistent, simply directing the light more effectively toward the aquarium.
The clip-on mechanism secures firmly to the light’s housing, maintaining stability during operation while allowing easy detachment for maintenance or adjustments. Users are encouraged to ensure that the visor is properly aligned so that it does not cast shadows or interfere with the even light distribution that Red Sea’s ReefLED series is known for.
Overall, the ReefLED G2 170 Visor is a precisely matched accessory for the ReefLED G2 170 unit, offering seamless compatibility, durability, and effective glare control without compromising performance or aesthetics.
Tips
Ensure correct alignment: When clipping it on, check from multiple angles to ensure it doesn’t cast unwanted shadows or dark areas in the tank.
Material and durability: Over time, visors made of plastic may accumulate scratches, salt creep, or discoloration. Cleaning with non-abrasive materials is recommended.
Ease of removal: Because it is removable, you can take it off for maintenance, photography, or adjustment if needed.
Compatibility checks: If you ever replace the lighting unit or change series, make sure the visor matches the form factor.
Trade-off assessment: You’ll slightly lose some light in certain angles (intentionally, to reduce spill), but the trade is often worth it for eye comfort and cleaner light containment.
Cleaning & maintenance: Rinse off salt spray or deposit to avoid haze or diffusion affecting visual clarity.
