Advantages of using CaribSea Arag-Alive Fiji Pink Sand

1. Faster Biological Maturation
   Because the sand comes “alive” with bacteria, it can help accelerate the establishment of the nitrogen cycle (conversion of ammonia → nitrite → nitrate). This reduces the time required before livestock can be safely introduced.

2. Buffering Support
   Being aragonitic (calcium carbonate), it contributes to buffering (helping maintain pH stability) as the sand dissolves slowly over time under acidic conditions. This is beneficial in marine systems.

3. Aesthetic Appeal
   The pink hue gives a pleasing visual contrast, and the uniform grain gives a clean substrate look. Filming or viewing through clear water, the sand can enhance the appearance of corals and fish.

4. Good for Sand-Sifting / Burrowing Species
   The 0.5 – 1.5 mm grain size is often considered appropriate for species like gobies, jawfish, sand-sifting stars, etc., who like to move substrate, as long as flow isn’t too intense.

5. Reduced New Tank Shock / Algae Suppression
   Because the substrate helps the microbial community take hold faster, it can reduce nutrient spikes and thus limit nuisance algae during the early phases.

Considerations

1. Kick-up / Stability Under Flow
   Some aquarists report that finer sand (including Fiji Pink) can get disturbed or suspended in high flow conditions, particularly before it “settles in.” However, many users say it becomes stable after some time.

2. Not All Bacteria Survive Transport / Aging
   The “live bacteria” concept relies on bacterial viability during packaging, shipping, and storage. If the bag is old or poorly stored, bacterial populations may decline.

3. Expense vs. Inert Sands
   Because of the “live” component and premium branding, it may cost more than inert or cheaper reef sands.

4. Limited Deep Sand Bed Use
   If you aim for a deep (several inches) anaerobic sand bed (DSB), the 0.5–1.5 mm grain might be less ideal compared to coarser sands, which better allow the formation of deeper low-oxygen zones.

5. Handling & Setup Care Required
   Because the substrate is considered biological, one should avoid heavy disturbance or rinsing at setup. Pouring water carefully and minimizing turbulence during setup is recommended to avoid clouding and preserving bacteria.

Recommended Use 

• Depth / Layering: Commonly used depth is ~1–2 inches (about 2.5–5 cm), but this depends on your tank, livestock, and desired look.

• Placement: Distribute evenly across the bottom, preferably placing rock structure first or substrate under rock, then layering remaining sand to avoid dislodging rock.

• Setup / Filling the Tank: Use a plate or bag (inverted) to prevent water directly pouring on the sand. Add water slowly to reduce disturbance and cloudiness. Because it contains beneficial bacteria, avoid or minimize rinsing.

• Cycling / Maturation: Monitor ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate during early phases. Even “live” sands won’t instantly establish full biological filtration; supplementation (live rock, bacterial additives) and patience are still needed.

• Maintenance: Clean substrate careful (siphon lightly, avoid deep stirring) so as not to kill or dislodge beneficial microbial populations. Over time, some fine particles or detritus will accumulate, which is normal.

• Compatibility: Suitable for reef setups (corals, invertebrates, fish) assuming correct parameter control. Works well with sand-sifting species.
