Jump MJ-L230R LED Refugium - Maxspect

The Maxspect Jump LED MJ-L230R is a LED light fixture designed for refugia or macroalgae cultivation in marine aquariums. Refugia are separate compartments (often in the sump) used to grow macroalgae (e.g. Chaetomorpha, Caulerpa) that help with nutrient export, or simply to provide supplemental lighting in parts of the system.

The “R” in MJ-L230R denotes the “Refugium” / macroalgae-optimized version, which has a spectrum more tailored for algae growth (including red LEDs) compared to versions more tuned for corals or display lighting.

  • The body is made entirely from aluminum with a matte finish. This gives good durability plus a premium appearance.

  • It has a fanless, passive cooling design, which means no moving parts for airflow and thus quiet operation. Useful in humid/marine/refugium settings.

  • Fully sealed or waterproof design suitable for wet and salty environments.

  • Comes with an inline controller (physical controller) — no WiFi or app needed. The controller lets you pick among preset modes / spectra, and choose lighting duration (photoperiod) among several fixed options.

 Technical specs for the MJ-L230R

  • Power consumption: ~30 Watts total.

  • LED count & spectrum: 43 LEDs. In the “R” version these are divided into approximately:

    • 24 × Hyper Red (~660 nm) LEDs

    • 15 × Deep Blue (~450-455 nm) LEDs

    • 4 × White LEDs (≈ 6500-7000K)

  • Alternate / non-“R” version (MJ-L230): has a different LED mix — e.g. more white / sky blue / UV / violet for coral/display emphasis.

  • Lens / beam angle: Each LED has a 90° high-transparency acrylic lens / array. The lens setup is meant to distribute light evenly across the refugium.

  • Photoperiod / timing options: 3 durations selectable — 6 hours, 10 hours, or 12 hours.

  • Presets / spectra modes: Depending on model, multiple “preset” spectra or light modes you can choose via the inline controller with one button press. No dimming from external device or app; you pick among fixed profiles.

  • Physical dimensions: Without mounting bracket or hanging kit, the unit measures about 242 × 124 × 28.5 mm.

  • Weight: About 845 grams (≈ 0.845 kg).

  • Input / Power supply:

    • Input: AC 100-240 V, 50/60 Hz (typical universal mains)

    • Output: DC 24 V, 1.5 A (for the lamp)

  • Recommended tank/refugium width / coverage: Suited for refugia / tanks approximately 30-50 cm wide. This is the span over which the light will give effective coverage.

  • Mounting / installation: Comes with mounts; optionally can be hung (suspension/hanging kit sold separately) if desired.

Advantages when using Jump MJ-L230R LED Refugium by Maxspect

  • Quiet operation because of passive cooling, no fans—very good for refugiums or cabinets.

  • Tailored spectrum in the “R” version: with red + deep blue + white, which is good for macroalgae photosynthesis. Red light is particularly helpful for many macroalgae.

  • Durable / marine-safe build: Aluminum, waterproofing, sealed design. Good for wet/humid environments.

  • Energy efficiency: For 30 W, relatively low power draw compared to older fluorescent or less efficient LED fixtures.

  • Ease of use: Simple presets and fixed photoperiod options mean less fiddling. Good if you want reliable performance without needing to configure via apps or schedules.

Limitations of Jump MJ-L230R LED Refugium by Maxspect

  • No “fine” dimming or external control: you’re limited to preset spectra and photoperiod durations. If you want dynamic spectrum changes, Bluetooth/WiFi dimming, etc., this may not cover your wishes.

  • Photoperiod fixed to those three durations — no intermediate times unless you manually switch.

  • For deeper water or very tall refugia, the beam may not penetrate as well; its design is optimized for relatively shallow compartments typical in refugiums, so light drop-off may limit effectiveness if the algae layer is thick or the water column deep.

  • Hanging kit is optional, not always included, so extra cost if you want suspended mounting.
