Nitrates are a byproduct in the nitrogen cycle. High levels of nitrates in reef aquariums can cause the growth of undesirable organisms such as algae and dinoflagellates, while a deficiency of this compound can lead to starvation, where SPS corals and other corals will show color loss or paleness.
