Nitrites are an intermediate form of nitrogen produced when ammonia is converted to nitrate during the nitrogen cycle. When organic matter decomposes, ammonia is produced. Ammonia, which is highly toxic, is converted into nitrite by bacteria, and nitrite is then converted into nitrate by other bacteria. Nitrite is dangerous to aquatic life if it accumulates, causing tissue damage that can lead to disease and death.
