Description
NP BIOPELLETS All in One – DVH
NP BioPellets All-In-One (DVH) is a specially formulated bio-pellet media designed to reduce both nitrates (NO₃) and phosphates (PO₄) in aquariums using a single media. It builds on earlier NP-Reducing BioPellets by adding phosphate removal functionality, so you don’t need a separate phosphate adsorbent. It’s made of highly purified biodegradable polymer, safe for sensitive marine organisms like corals, inverts, and fish.
The principle it uses is immobilization: the pellets provide organic carbon (as food) for aerobic bacteria, which grow on and in the pellets. Those bacteria consume nitrate and phosphate from the water, converting them and the carbon source into bacterial biomass. Excess bacteria are removed by skimming, filtration, or are consumed by filter feeders.
Key Characteristics & Performance
The BIOPELLETS All in One version is claimed to remove nitrate ~5× more efficiently and phosphate ~10-20× more efficiently than standard NP bio-pellets.
Works best with high flow rates. For example, a 700 L tank using 2 L of this media in a fluidised reactor may need ~2000-3000 l/h flow to achieve optimal turnover.
Takes 1-4 weeks for bacterial colonies to establish sufficiently to see measurable drops in nitrate and phosphate.
Over time, pellets degrade / are consumed by bacteria, so you’ll need to replenish every 3-6 months (or up to 12 months depending on usage) when the volume drops or when tests show nutrient levels rising again.
Available in several sizes: 250 ml, 500 ml, 1000 ml depending on retailer.
Features & Benefits of NP BIOPELLETS All in One
Single-media solution: Because of the built-in phosphate removal capability, you can avoid using separately a phosphate-adsorbent alongside biopellets. Simplifies setup.
Improved efficiency: Faster and stronger nutrient removal (NO₃ & PO₄) vs standard bio-pellets.
Safe for sensitive organisms: Purified material to minimize risk of introducing harmful compounds; suitable for marine tanks with corals, etc.
Things to Watch / Limitations
Need for good flow and correct setup: If flow is too low, pellets won’t tumble properly, reducing surface contact and effectiveness. May lead to anaerobic spots or uneven bacterial colonisation.
Gradual ramp-up recommended: Especially in systems with high nitrate levels (> ~20 ppm), you should add pellets gradually over several weeks to avoid sudden depletion of nutrients, pH swings, or oxygen dips.
Possible cloudiness / bacterial surplus: As bacterial biomass grows, there may be more suspended bacteria. Using a sponge filter or placing the reactor outlet near a skimmer is advised to remove excess bacteria.
Oxygen & aeration concerns: Especially at night or in tanks with low gas exchange, the oxygen demand of bacterial growth can cause problems. Good surface agitation, skimming, or aeration is needed.
Practical Tips for Use
Soak or rinse the pellets before first use to remove dust/fines. Some users soak for ~24 hours.
Use a fluidised reactor with high throughput to ensure the pellets are in motion (“tumbling”) rather than settling.
Place reactor’s outlet near or into the protein skimmer intake to help remove excess bacteria and enhance gas exchange.
Monitor nitrate and phosphate regularly (test kits) to track performance and adjust dosage. If increasing bioload or feeding, adjust accordingly.
Replace or top up pellets when their volume drops significantly or test results start to worsen (every 3-6 months typically).
Conclusion:
The NP BioPellets All-in-One by DVH is an upgraded version of standard biopellets designed to tackle both nitrates and phosphates simultaneously. By combining a carbon source with phosphate-binding capacity, it lets aquarists run a single media instead of multiple products. When used correctly in a fluidised reactor with strong flow and good aeration, it can rapidly reduce nutrients and improve water clarity and coral health.
Because of its higher efficiency, it should be introduced gradually, monitored closely with test kits, and topped up regularly as the pellets are consumed. With the right setup, it’s a powerful, space-saving and low-maintenance tool for maintaining ultra-low nutrient levels in marine (and even freshwater) systems.
