NP BIOPELLETS All in One Advanced – DVH

The NP BioPellets All-in-One Advanced by DVH is a specially formulated bio-pellet media (pellets) for use in fluidised bed reactors or any part of the aquarium system with high water circulation. It’s meant to reduce both nitrates (NO₃) and phosphates (PO₄) simultaneously, using a single “all-in-one” media instead of using separate media for phosphate removal + separate biopellets.

It claims to be 5× more efficient for nitrate removal and 10-20× more efficient for phosphate removal compared to standard biopellet media.

Key Details & Specifications

  • Purity & Composition: Made from highly purified compounds; has a unique microporous structure combined with a secondary facilitator that helps bind acids and nutrients. These features support bacterial activity both on the surface (external) and inside (internal pores) of the pellets.

  • Available Sizes: Packaged in several sizes, commonly 250 ml, 500 ml, 800 g, 1000 ml.

  • Recommended Dosage: Usually 35-150 ml of pellets per 100 litres of water in a fluidised reactor. If nitrate levels are over about 20 ppm, you should add the media gradually.

  • Flow Requirements: Works best with high water flow. For example, a 700 litre aquarium with 2 litres of this media in a fluidised filter should have a flow of 2000-3000 L/h through the reactor for good performance.

  • Time for Effectiveness: Bacterial colonies typically establish in 1-4 weeks, after which you'll begin to see reductions in nitrate and phosphate. Full “steady-state” effect may take longer depending on feeding load, aquarium size, livestock, etc.

  • Maintenance / Replacement: Pellets degrade over time (are “consumed” by bacteria), so it’s recommended to add more pellets every 3-6 months depending on consumption and on measured NO₃ and PO₄ in the aquarium.

The Mechanism Of How It Works

  • The pellets provide both a carbon source (organic media) and built-in phosphate removal capability. Bacteria (aerobic) grow on and in the pellets, using the carbon from the pellets and taking up nitrate and (ortho)phosphate from the water. This gets converted into bacterial biomass — this process is called immobilization.

  • Excess bacteria (bacterial biomass) can be removed by filter feeders, corals, sponges, or via protein skimmer or filter sponge to avoid cloudiness.

Features & Benefits of NP BIOPELLETS All in One Advanced

  • Combines both nitrate and phosphate reduction in one media, so you don’t need separate media (reduces cost & space).

  • Very effective when used under correct conditions (good flow, enough media). Can achieve very low to undetectable nitrate and phosphate levels in time.

  • High purity means safer for sensitive organisms (corals, invertebrates), less likely to introduce unwanted compounds.

Things to Watch / Limitations

  • Requires good flow: if the water flow through the reactor or media bed is too low, the pellets will not be fluidised adequately, reducing effectiveness.

  • Oxygen & aeration: Aerobic bacteria need oxygen. Poor aeration or inadequate gas exchange (especially at night) may lead to low oxygen or pH swings.

  • Cloudiness risk: Initial bacterial bloom or excess bacteria may cause water to appear a bit cloudy. Use polishing filters, sponges, or skimmer to handle that.

  • Gradual introduction: Because of its potency, introduce media gradually, especially in aquariums with higher nitrate or phosphate levels, to avoid sudden shifts.

Practical Tips for Using It

  • Pre-soak the pellets for about 24 hours in aquarium water before putting them into the reactor. This helps remove dust/fines and promotes even fluidisation.

  • Use a fluidised bed reactor or ensure the media bed is well circulated. High flow is essential.

  • Measure nitrate and phosphate levels regularly. If nitrates > ~20 ppm, increase pellets gradually. Also monitor media bed volume (pellets may shrink or settle) and replenish every 3-6 months.

  • Ensure adequate filtration / skimming / polishing downstream (e.g. sponge, skimmer) to remove excess bacterial biomass and avoid cloudiness.

  • Allow a transition period (1-4 weeks) before expecting full performance. During this period, gradually increase amount of pellets if everything is stable.
