Description

REEFER 100 micron Felt Fine Polish filterbag – Red Sea

The 100 micron felt fine polish filter bag is a high-density felt sock designed to perform ultra-fine mechanical filtration (“polishing”) in aquarium systems. It captures very small suspended particles and organic debris once the tank is already relatively clean, helping improve water clarity. It is part of Red Sea’s micron felt & thin-mesh filter bag range.

It is reusable and suitable for seawater reef aquariums and freshwater setups. It is designed for use in Red Sea’s REEFER and MAX-S systems, but also fits any standard filter sock holder with a 4-inch (≈ 10 cm) ring.

Details for REEFER 100 micron Felt Fine Polish filterbag

  • Filtration rating (pore size): 100 microns. This rating means it traps particles as small as about 100 µm. It’s considered “fine polish” because it catches finer debris than coarser socks (e.g. 225 µm).

  • Material: High-density felt, synthetic fibre. The felt wall is relatively thick compared to mesh, allowing particles to lodge within the felt itself (depth filtration), not just on the surface.

  • Dimensions: Approximately 26 cm in length (≈ 10.5 inches) and diameter about 10 cm (≈ 4 inches). Fits the 4-inch ring holders common in REEFER / MAX-S systems and standard 10 cm/4-inch sock holders.

  • Wall thickness / felt density: Because it is “fine polish,” the felt is denser and thicker, which increases particle retention but also increases resistance when clogged. The wall is made to capture very fine particles in its bulk, so the fibres are closely packed.

  • Seams / ring / holder compatibility: It has a reinforced opening (often a ring) to hold its shape and allow secure mounting in the sock holder. The felt is sewn or bonded so the shape is preserved under flow. It’s made to maintain compatibility with REEFER / MAX-S filter sock racks.

REEFER 100 micron Felt Fine Polish filterbag by Red Sea

  • The 100 micron felt bag works by blocking very small particulates (uneaten food dust, fine detritus, microscopic organic waste) as water flows through it. Because of the dense felt structure, particles collect throughout the felt wall (not just on the surface), offering deeper filtration.

  • It is often used in mature aquariums (i.e. ones that don’t have lots of large particles floating around) because heavy particulate loads would clog it too quickly. In new tanks or after major cleaning/maintenance, it might overwhelm the felt.

  • As it loads up, flow through the bag is reduced; this means that pressure / flow drop will happen more quickly than with coarser socks. Regular observation and replacement/cleaning are needed.

Advantages:

  • Much finer polishing of water: helps achieve very clear, low-particulate water in display tanks.

  • Good removal of microscopic organic waste, which might contribute to elevated nitrates / phosphates if left suspended.

  • Reusable: with proper cleaning, the felt bag can be used repeatedly, making it more economical over time compared to disposable ultra-fine pads.

  • Since it fits standard holders, it integrates easily into many aquarium systems without needing special adapters.

Limitations:

  • Clogs faster: because the 100 µm felt is dense, debris accumulates rapidly, so maintenance (cleaning / replacement) must be more frequent than with coarser socks.

  • Higher flow restriction: once dirty, it can significantly reduce water flow unless cleaned. May stress pumps or reduce filtration efficiency downstream if flow is compromised.

  • Felt degradation over time: frequent cleaning or harsh methods (high pressure, scrubbing) may damage fibres, reduce porosity, or cause holes.

  • Not suitable if your aquarium regularly has heavy particulate load (e.g. messy feeders, high sediment) unless it's used with a coarser prefilter stage to remove bulk material first.

Best Practices

  • Use as a “polishing stage” after coarser filtration (e.g. a mesh sock or coarse felt) so that the 100 µm bag doesn’t get overwhelmed.

  • Monitor flow: when you see flow dropping significantly, or water backing up, it’s time to clean/replace.

  • Rinse with clean freshwater (or use aquarium-water rinse depending on sensitivity) to remove trapped particles; avoid aggressive scrubbing that damages felt. Some hobbyists soak them or wash gently; others even use washing machine cycles (with appropriate care) to get them clean.

  • Rotate multiple bags: having more than one allows you to swap them out before they clog hard, and clean one while another is in use.

  • Inspect for damage: holes, thinning or tears around seams or top ring; replace when effectiveness drops or structure is compromised.

  • Pre-rinse before first use to remove any manufacturing residues.
