Description
REEFER 225 micron Thin-mesh filterbag – Red Sea
The 225 micron Thin-Mesh filter bag from Red Sea (also used in REEFER and MAX-S systems) is a reusable mechanical filtration accessory for saltwater / reef aquariums.
Its main role is to trap suspended particulate matter (uneaten food, fine detritus, debris) from the aquarium water before it circulates back into display or sump sections, thereby improving water clarity and reducing load on finer filters.
It may also serve as a “holder” for additional filter media (e.g. carbon, phosphate removers) because of its monofilament mesh design.
Details about Red Sea 225 micron Thin-Mesh Filter Bag
The filter bag is made from a synthetic monofilament mesh, typically nylon. The mesh is woven so that fine particles larger than about 225 microns are trapped, while allowing water to pass through with relatively low resistance.
The bag is cylindrical: its internal diameter is about 10 cm (≈ 4 inches), which matches standard ring or sock holders of that size. The length of the bag is around 26 cm (≈ 10.5 inches).
It’s designed to be reusable — the mesh material is light and fairly thin (“thin-mesh”) rather than thick felt. That means the walls are not very thick; it’s more surface filtration than depth filtration. The “thin-mesh” construction helps minimize restriction when clean, and makes cleaning (rinsing, flushing) easier.
The top opening is reinforced so it can be mounted securely in a 4-inch filter sock holder or compatible frame. When used, the bag forms a sleeve inside the holder so water flows through the mesh across the surface.
Because the mesh is monofilament, it tends to resist clogging less deeply than felt. Debris mostly accumulates on the surface, which lets users clean it relatively easily and frequently. The material is durable enough for repeated use, though over time the mesh may sag or wear, especially around seams or at the opening.

Best Use Cases
High particulate loads: In newly set up aquariums, after major maintenance (water changes, heavy disturbance), or whenever there is a surge in particulate matter, the 225 micron thin mesh bag is ideal because it doesn’t clog as fast as finer mesh.
As a primary mechanical prefilter: It can be placed before more delicate mechanical or chemical media to catch coarse particles first.
Holder for media: Because of its mesh design, one can place carbon, phosphate resins, or other media inside the bag, so the bag holds the media while still allowing water flow.
Advantages of using REEFER 225 micron Thin-mesh filterbag – Red Sea
Ease of cleaning — the monofilament mesh can be rinsed or flushed clean relatively quickly.
Less clogging (compared to finer mesh) — because 225 µm is coarser than, say, 100 µm, it resists clogging in higher load situations.
Reusable — unlike disposable filter pads.
Versatility — can act both as mechanical filter and as holder for additional media.
Compatibility — fits standard 4″ filter sock holders as well as Red Sea’s own systems.
Limitations
Not fine polishing — 225 µm is relatively coarse, so fine particles will pass through; one may need additional finer filtration downstream.
Potential flow restriction — when loaded with debris, it may impede flow; regular cleaning is necessary.
Wear over time — mesh may degrade, fray, or stretch over many cleaning cycles (depends on frequency and method).
Partial clogging effect — uneven clogging may channel flow through parts of the mesh, reducing effectiveness.
Maintenance Tips
Flush or backwash frequently — especially if you notice reduced flow or discoloration.
Gentle handling — avoid scraping or aggressive brushing which can damage the fine mesh.
Rotate / replace periodically — even reusable media will degrade; monitor for holes or thinning.
Pre-rinse before first use — to remove any residue or particles from manufacturing.
Use as first stage filter — place it before other filtration media to reduce load.
