Fluidized Zeolite Reactor ZA 509 – Deltec
Deltec Fluidized Zeolite Reactor ZA 509 – Compact, High-Performance Nutrient Control
The Deltec Fluidized Zeolite Reactor ZA 509 is a compact, high-performance fluidized-bed reactor designed to deliver professional-grade nutrient reduction in saltwater and reef aquariums. Engineered in Germany and built to Deltec’s renowned standards, the ZA 509 gives reef keepers an automated, low-maintenance way to achieve ultra-low-nutrient water conditions in tanks up to 500 litres (≈130 US gallons).
Why Use a Zeolite Reactor?
Zeolite is a naturally occurring mineral with an enormous internal surface area. When water passes through a bed of zeolite stones, two processes happen simultaneously:
Adsorption: the zeolite physically binds ammonium, organics, and other dissolved impurities.
Biological filtration: the porous surface provides a huge habitat for beneficial bacteria that further process waste compounds.
This dual action is why zeolite systems are so effective at creating ultra-low nutrient systems (ULNS) where corals exhibit stronger coloration and growth and nuisance algae is minimized.
Fine-Grain Media for Maximum Efficiency
The ZA 509 is designed to run fine-grain zeolite (1–2 mm) rather than coarse stones. The smaller grain size means a dramatically higher effective surface area for both adsorption and bacterial colonization. Thanks to this efficiency, the ZA 509 can comfortably handle tanks up to its rated capacity and, under lighter nutrient loads, potentially up to twice the recommended system size. This gives aquarists a safety margin and flexibility as their systems mature.
Media Capacity: 1.5 kg
Recommended Aquarium Size: up to 500 L (130 US gal)
Automated Agitation – No More Daily Shaking
Most zeolite filters require manual shaking to prevent clumping and to release detritus. The ZA 509 removes that chore. It includes a power-adjustable DC fluidizing pump that automatically agitates the zeolite bed. By plugging the pump into a simple timer (not included), you can schedule several short agitation cycles per day – keeping the media loose and active without touching the reactor. Automated agitation means steadier performance, fewer channeling problems, and less hands-on maintenance.
Efficient Fluidization – Uniform Flow, No Channeling
Deltec’s tall reaction chamber and precision-engineered flow plates ensure even fluidization of the media. Water flows uniformly through the entire bed instead of forming channels. This maximizes contact between water and zeolite, improves nutrient removal, and minimizes the buildup of detritus inside the reactor.
Required Feed Pump Flow: 250 L/h (≈65 gph)
Flexible Installation Options
The ZA 509 can be mounted internally inside your sump for a clean, space-saving setup, or externally next to the sump if internal space is limited. Quick-connect fittings and a compact footprint make installation straightforward. This flexibility allows the reactor to integrate easily into both new and existing filtration systems.
Maintenance and Media Replacement
For best performance, replace the zeolite media every 6–8 weeks depending on your aquarium’s bioload. Always rinse new media before use to remove dust. Adjust the flow so the bed gently moves rather than boiling vigorously; excessive tumbling can break down the stones prematurely. As with any nutrient-control system, monitor nitrate, phosphate, and alkalinity regularly so you can fine-tune operation to your tank’s needs.
