Description

LED Grow Light H160 Tuna Flora – Kessil

The Kessil H160 Tuna Flora LED is a groundbreaking full spectrum LED refugium light that is intensity and spectrum controllable, perfect for most refugium algae such as chaetomorpha and caulerpa and most plants.
The H160 Tuna Flora features four efficient spectrums - blue, GROW, BLOOM, red - in one single fixture. The light is perfectly blended, with wavelengths including near UVA and Infrared (ranging from 380-780 nm), enhancing photosynthetic efficiency.

Specifications

  • Spectral Modes: The H160 comes with four distinct spectral modes — Blue, Grow, Bloom, and Red — allowing you to adjust the light spectrum to support different growth phases of algae or plants.

  • Wavelength Range: Covers a wide spectrum from about 380 nm (near-UVA) up to 780 nm (far-red), ensuring full photosynthetic support.

  • Power Consumption: Operates at up to 40 watts, making it energy-efficient for its output.

  • Power Supply: Works with a 100–240V AC input and includes a power adapter that outputs 19V DC.

  • Size and Weight: Compact design, measuring about 4 inches tall by 2.48 inches in diameter (approximately 10.2 × 6.3 cm), and weighing around 0.88 pounds (400 g).

  • Coverage: Can illuminate up to 24" × 24" areas in ideal conditions, with an 18" × 18" spread being more typical for consistent growth.

  • Cooling System: Uses a fanless, passive cooling design — meaning quieter operation and fewer moving parts that need maintenance.

  • Control Options: Equipped with onboard dials to adjust spectrum and intensity manually. It is also compatible with 0–10V external controllers and can be daisy-chained with other Kessil units for synchronized control.

  • Mounting Options: Ships with hooks and brackets, and is compatible with optional accessories like gooseneck mounts or light directors for more targeted illumination.

  • Warranty and Build: Built with Kessil’s Dense Matrix LED technology for even light distribution, and typically comes with a 1-year manufacturer warranty.

Spectral Use

  • Dense Matrix LED Technology: Kessil compresses many LED chips into a tight cluster (Dense Matrix) so that the output appears like a uniform light source rather than discrete LEDs. This helps with blending and even coverage.

  • Spectrum Modes & Their Purpose:

    • BLUE: Encourages structural growth (stem extension, framework) in plants / algae.

    • GROW: General vegetative growth, “all-around” mode for many plants during non-reproductive phases.

    • BLOOM: For stimulating flowering / reproduction / yield in plants during reproductive or “bloom” phases.

    • RED: Encourages rooting, tissue culture, or finishing (productivity) in later stages.

  • Because the spectrum is tunable, you can shift your lighting strategy through a plant / algae growth cycle, or optimize it depending on your macroalgae type or nutrient load.

  • The 0–10 V compatibility and ability to daisy-chain allow for synchronized control across multiple units, possibly via a controller (e.g. Kessil’s spectral controller) to simulate dawn/dusk, ramping, etc.

Advantages of using LED Grow Light H160 Tuna Flora bt Kessil

  • Compact / Low Profile: Because it uses the same physical design as the A160, it’s sleek, minimal, and suitable for tight refugium / sump setups.

  • Low Heat & Maintenance: Fanless passive cooling means fewer moving parts and lower maintenance (no fan cleaning).

  • Adjustable Spectrum: The multiple spectral modes give flexibility — you’re not locked into one spectral output.

  • Efficient Use of Power: At ~ 40 W, it is relatively power efficient for a growth fixture.

  • Good for Controlling Nutrients: When used properly in a refugium, it can aid in nutrient export (by promoting macroalgae growth) in smaller spaces.

  • User Feedback: Many users report strong growth of macroalgae (e.g. Chaetomorpha) with this fixture. For example, one user mentioned 3× to 4× growth in two weeks after switching to it. Another user compared it favorably to the H380, saying less heat, bulk, and noise.

Considerations of LED Grow Light H160 Tuna Flora

  • Coverage Edge Falloff / Spill: Some users note that coverage can “spill over” into adjacent compartments (e.g. hitting skimmers or other equipment). You may need shading or directional control (light directors) to avoid unwanted illumination.

  • Overkill for Very Small Refugia: For very small refugium spaces, the intensity might exceed what is strictly necessary; some prefer the H80 for smaller setups.

  • No Onboard Sensor / Feedback: It lacks built-in sensors (e.g. PAR sensors, temperature sensors) — control is manual or via external controllers.

  • Warranty / Durability: While generally well-built, LED long-term degradation (especially in humid / wet environments) is always a concern. Ensure proper mounting, sealing, and ventilation.

  • Price: As a specialized high-end grow light, it may carry a premium cost compared to simpler LED options.

Tips for Best Use

  • Distance / Height: Position it at an optimal height so you get uniform light across your macroalgae mat but without burning. Because it is compact, even a few centimeters of vertical spacing can matter.

  • Spectrum Cycling: Use different spectral modes over time (for example GROW mode for general growth, then adding or switching to BLUE or BLOOM) depending on your algae species and desired outcome.

  • Ramp / Dusk / Dawn: If your controller allows, gradually ramping intensity helps avoid light shock, and mimics natural lighting.

  • Shade / Light Directors: To avoid light spillage into unwanted areas (skimmers, other compartments), use shading, baffles, or light directors. Some users order “light directors” or sleeves to focus illumination.

  • Multiple Units: If your refugium or tank is large, you can daisy-chain multiple H160s to get more coverage or smoother overlap.

  • Ventilation & Dry Space: Even though it is fanless, ensure ambient ventilation and that moisture doesn’t accumulate around the unit’s thermal path.

The Kessil H160 Tuna Flora is a high-quality, flexible, compact LED grow light designed especially for refugia, macroalgae, and aquatic plant growth. It offers multiple spectral modes, integrated dimming, passive cooling, and the ability to chain and control multiple units. In practical terms, it gives you more flexibility and power than many simpler LED grow lights, while still maintaining a small footprint.
