Coral Pro Salt

Red Sea Coral Pro Salt bucket 22 kg

Premium grade, high Alkalinity

Red Sea Coral Pro Salt in the 22 kg bucket is a large-format, premium reef-grade synthetic sea salt blend engineered for marine aquariums with corals, especially LPS and SPS species, and for coral frag systems. According to the manufacturer, when properly mixed it yields about 660 litres (≈ 175 US gallons) of reef water at the recommended salinity.

This formulation provides elevated, biologically balanced levels of the key “foundation elements” — calcium, magnesium, and carbonate/bicarbonate (alkalinity) — in proportions selected to support stable water chemistry, robust coral skeletal growth, and minimal need for post-mix adjustment.

Packaging in a bucket format makes the 22 kg version convenient to store and measure, and ideal for frequent or large water changes in medium to large reef systems.

Coral Pro contains elevated and balanced levels of the foundation elements (Calcium, Magnesium, Bicarbonates) necessary for sustainable, accelerated coral growth.

If your goal is to maximize coral growth, then Coral Pro combined with our reef care recipes will enhance growth up to four times their natural rate. Coral Pro’s Alkalinity of 12 dKH makes it ideal for mixed reefs and SPS frag tanks. In addition, with higher dissolvability of our new & improved formula it only takes about 20 minutes from bucket to tank, which makes your mixing routine far more convenient.

Natural seawater includes over 70 elements. Most of them influence the water parameters, but only a few play a significant role in its overall chemical stability. These elements form the foundation of the reef environment and include three major elements: Calcium, Magnesium, and Bicarbonates.

The three ‘foundation elements’ have a major effect on pH stability, Alkalinity, seawater ionic strength, and many of the coral’s biological processes (skeleton formation, ion-exchange, photosynthesis).

  • Elevated Foundation Elements: Coral Pro contains higher-than-standard concentrations of the core elements needed for coral health: Calcium, Magnesium, and Carbonates/Bicarbonates (alkalinity). These are in balanced ratios chosen from internal research to support accelerated coral skeleton growth and stability.

  • High Alkalinity: The target alkalinity is around 12 dKH (which corresponds roughly to ~4.3 meq/L) when mixed correctly. This higher alkalinity helps buffer pH, supports coral calcification, and allows more margin in systems with heavier coral loads.

  • Trace Elements & Minor Elements: In addition to the foundation elements, Coral Pro includes a fuller complement of trace and minor elements (those beyond Ca, Mg, KH) that occur in natural reef seawater. These elements are important for coral pigmentation, metabolic function, and overall reef organism health.

  • Purity & Additive Profile:

    • No added phosphates or nitrates. This helps avoid feeding unwanted algal growth.

    • No chemical binders.

    • Low moisture content, which helps with consistency in mixing and reduces clumping.

    • No toxic or elevated heavy metals.

  • Salinity & Mixing Yield:

    • When fully dissolved, the 7 kg bucket will yield about 210 litres of mixed seawater at the standard reef salinity (≈ 35 ppt).

    • Requires clean mixing water — ideally RO/DI (reverse osmosis + deionization) water.

  • pH Stability: The salt is formulated so that after mixing and stabilizing, the pH tends to settle in the 8.2–8.5 range, depending on temperature and buffering.

Unlike the natural reef environment, where there is an immense reservoir of the foundation elements, the reef aquarium has limited resources that are quickly depleted by the aquarium inhabitants. Therefore, in order to enable sustainable coral growth, it is necessary to maintain higher than natural levels of the foundation elements.

Original research carried out in Red Sea’s laboratory has shown that when increasing the levels of the foundation elements above the levels found in natural sea water, in a very specific ratio , will enhance coral growth and the formation of a robust aragonite coral skeleton.

Coral Pro Salt is made according to these ideal ratios, removing the need to adjust the levels of foundation elements after water changes, and providing your corals with a healthy and stable home.

  • Accelerated Coral Growth: Because foundation element levels are higher and balanced, this salt supports faster skeletal growth in SPS/LPS corals, particularly useful in coral fragging or densely stocked reef systems.

  • Less Supplementation Needed: Since the salt mix itself supplies elevated levels of Ca, Mg, and alkalinity, there’s less need (or lower frequency) for manually dosing those foundation elements just to maintain baseline levels. This simplifies maintenance.

  • Consistency & Predictability: Red Sea claims that the product is tested (e.g. by ICP analysis or similar methods) to ensure that batches deliver the promised chemistry reliably.

  • Cleaner Profile: Because it’s free of added algae-feeding nutrients (nitrate, phosphate) and heavy metals, it’s safer for sensitive corals and reduces the risk of unwanted algae blooms.

  • Because the alkalinity and calcium are relatively high, parameter swings can occur if a large water change of Coral Pro water is done into a tank that has lower existing alkalinity. Matching salinity, temperature, and heavy mixing/dilution may be necessary to avoid shocking corals. (Many reef keepers note the “alk jump” risk.)

  • Always measure water parameters (especially alkalinity, calcium, magnesium, salinity, pH) after mixing new batches, especially when switching salts or batches. Differences between batches or slight formulation variances can matter.

  • Mixing instructions: Use clean containers, RO/DI water, add salt to water (not water to salt), stir until fully dissolved, allow for stabilization of pH and temperature before use. (Red Sea’s manual recommends mixing times of ~0.5-2 hours, not exceeding ~4 hours, with monitoring of pH.)

  • If your tank is lightly stocked or you dose heavily for foundation elements already (Ca, Mg, KH), Coral Pro may overshoot desired parameter levels, so you may need to adjust dose / frequency of water changes accordingly.
