Description

REEF SPEC Carbon 1000ml - Red Sea

REEF-SPEC Carbon is a high-grade activated carbon product specifically formulated for marine and reef aquariums. The “1000 ml” size corresponds roughly to 0,5 kg (500 g) of the media (since smaller sizes like 500 ml are ~2500 g).

Red Sea markets REEF-SPEC Carbon as a premium carbon media optimized for reef use — combining high adsorption capacity with minimal side-effects (such as phosphate leaching) and designed to last longer than generic activated carbons.

Red Sea’s REEF-SPEC Carbon is a premium-grade activated carbon designed specifically for marine and reef aquarium use. It features a granule size of approximately 0.6 to 2.3 mm, optimized to balance high surface area with efficient water flow. The packing density is about 0.48 g/ml, and the pore volume is 1.04 ml per gram, which allows for excellent adsorption of both small and large organic molecules.

This carbon has an exceptionally high total surface area of around 1,000 m² per gram, which gives it a powerful capacity to remove dissolved organic compounds, toxins, and discoloration from aquarium water. The TSA-to-pore-volume ratio is roughly 990 m²/ml, reflecting its fine internal pore structure that maximizes contact with passing water.

In terms of performance, REEF-SPEC Carbon can adsorb about 1000 mg/g of small organic molecules and approximately 280 mg/g of larger organic compounds, making it highly effective for clarifying water and removing chemical pollutants. The product maintains a pH level above 8 when placed in distilled water, ensuring it remains safe and stable for marine organisms.

The carbon is manufactured to have extremely low phosphate leaching and minimal ash content, both of which are critical factors in preventing unwanted nutrient introduction into reef systems. It is also pre-cleaned and supplied with filter bags for convenient use in reactors or filter chambers.

Overall, Red Sea’s REEF-SPEC Carbon combines high adsorption performance, chemical stability, and reef-safe formulation, making it one of the most efficient and reliable activated carbons available for saltwater aquariums.

Some of the advantages and intended benefits of using REEF-SPEC Carbon include:

  • Rapid removal of organic pollutants — It’s designed to adsorb dissolved organic compounds (DOCs, phenols, etc.) that are too small to be removed by mechanical filtration or skimming.

  • Improved clarity & reduced yellow tint — Helps maintain clearer water by eliminating coloration-causing organics.

  • Low side-effects — Because of its low phosphate leaching, low ash, and neutral effect on pH, it minimizes undesirable interactions with coral and water chemistry.

  • Longer life / less frequent replacement — The product is marketed as needing replacement less often than generic carbons, making it more cost-effective over time in reef systems.

To get optimal performance and avoid problems, follow these guidelines:

  1. Rinse thoroughly – Before placing into your system, rinse the carbon in tap (or RO) water until rinse water is clear. This helps remove fines and dust.

  2. Soak to degas – Because air is often trapped in the pores, carbon can float. It helps to soak it in RO water until the air is released.

  3. Use in a reactor or bag – Reactors yield better contact times and performance. If using in a filter bag, place it where there is strong flow and “knead” it periodically to circulate media.

  4. Flow recommendation – Red Sea suggests about 250–400 GPH per 50 g of carbon, to balance contact time and throughput.

Dosage of REEF SPEC Carbon 1000ml – Red Sea

For routine maintenance and general water clarity, Red Sea recommends using approximately 50 grams (about 100 ml) of REEF-SPEC Carbon for every 200 liters (around 50 US gallons) of aquarium water. This amount is typically effective for 1 to 2 months, depending on the organic load and bioload of the system.

If the carbon is being used after medication treatments, the dosage should be increased to about 100 grams (roughly 200 ml) per 200 liters for a short duration of one week. This helps to efficiently remove any residual medication or unwanted chemicals from the water column.

When used as part of ozone post-filtration, the recommendation is 50 grams of carbon per 50 mg/hour of ozone output, positioned downstream from the ozone reactor or skimmer to absorb any remaining ozone and its byproducts. The carbon should be replaced once it becomes physically degraded or its volume is reduced by about half.

In general, REEF-SPEC Carbon should be replaced every 1.5 to 2 months to maintain optimal performance. Leaving carbon in the system for too long can result in saturation, reducing its ability to adsorb impurities and potentially allowing it to begin adsorbing beneficial trace elements instead.

Signs that it is time to replace the carbon include a noticeable reduction in water clarity, the return of yellowish tint, or a decrease in overall filtration effectiveness. Regular replacement according to your tank’s specific needs ensures consistently clear, toxin-free water and optimal conditions for coral and marine life.

Considerations

  • Contact time is critical — Even high-grade carbon will underperform if flow is too fast or contact time too short.

  • Saturation — Once carbon becomes saturated with organics, it can no longer adsorb effectively and can even release substances back into the water.

  • Trace element adsorption — If left too long, it may begin consuming wanted trace elements from the water.

  • Not a substitute for other filtration — It complements, does not replace, good protein skimming, biological filtration, mechanical filtration, etc.

  • Cost vs benefit trade-off — While premium, its longer lifespan and better performance often justify the cost in reef systems.

In essence, REEF-SPEC Carbon 1000 ml is a high-quality, reef-compatible activated carbon product that combines a carefully engineered pore structure, low side effects (low phosphate and ash), and strong adsorption capacity. When used properly with appropriate flow and periodic replacement, it is an effective tool in maintaining water clarity and controlling dissolved organics in reef aquariums.
