Description

What Is the ReefSense pH & Temperature Probe?

  • It’s a digital 2-in-1 sensor made by Red Sea, designed to measure both pH and temperature in a reef aquarium.

  • It works within Red Sea’s ReefControl / ReefBeat automation ecosystem: you plug it into a ReefControl Lite or Pro, and get real-time data, logging, alerts, and automation.

  • It uses a digital design, meaning the analog signal from the sensor is converted internally into a digital signal before being sent via the cable — this reduces noise / interference.

Specifications of ReefSense pH & Temperature Probe

  1. pH Measurement

    • The pH sensor has automatic temperature compensation, so its pH reading is more accurate as water temperature changes.

    • It uses a double-junction design (with two ceramic junctions) — this helps with longevity and stability.

    • Accuracy: ± 0.05 pH.

    • Precision / resolution: 0.01 pH.

  2. Temperature Measurement

    • Integrated temperature probe (inside the same “body” as the pH), so you don’t need a separate sensor for temperature.

    • Accuracy: ± 0.05 °C.

    • This temperature measurement is used to compensate the pH reading (as mentioned), but it’s also available on its own for logging / automations.

  3. Digital Calibration Memory

    • Calibration data is stored on the probe itself. That means if you unplug the probe (for cleaning, recalibration, or to move it to another ReefControl port), you don’t lose its calibration.

    • This makes maintenance / swapping much easier.

  4. Bluetooth (BLE) / Remote Use

    • The probe supports remote calibration / readings via Bluetooth, through the ReefBeat app.

    • This is very handy: you can remove the probe from your tank (e.g., take it to your mixing station or sink) and calibrate or check readings without having to crouch down by the sump.

  5. Integration & Automation

    • When connected to ReefControl Lite or Pro, you can:

      • Monitor pH and temperature in real time.

      • Log historical data / trends in the ReefBeat app.

      • Set alarms / notifications: e.g., get alerted if pH drifts outside a set range.

      • Use the readings to automate other devices: for example:

        • Use pH reading to control a CO₂ solenoid via ReefControl Power.

        • Use temperature reading to trigger a heater or fan / chiller.

  6. Robust Design

    • The double-junction ceramic design helps with durability and longevity in a reef environment.

    • Because the signal is digitized in the probe, it’s more immune to electromagnetic interference (EMI) that’s common in aquariums (due to pumps, heaters, etc.).

When It’s Especially Useful to use ReefSense pH & Temperature Probe

  • Monitoring Key Parameters: pH and temperature are among the most critical parameters in a reef tank; having continuous, accurate readings helps you maintain stability.

  • Automation for Stability: Use the probe’s data to drive automation: e.g. CO₂ dosing, fans, heaters — helps maintain stable pH and thermal environment.

  • Safety & Alerts: Set up alerts in ReefBeat — if temperature or pH go outside safe bounds, you’ll know quickly and can react.

  • Data Logging & Trends: Helps you track how pH and temperature vary over hours, days, or weeks. Useful for diagnosing drift problems or optimizing your control / dosing strategy.

  • Remote Calibration: Calibrate the probe away from the sump (where it’s likely more comfortable to do), thanks to Bluetooth functionality.

  • Modular Systems: If you already use (or plan to use) other ReefSense probes (salinity, ORP, ATO), this pH/temp probe plugs into the same controller and works seamlessly.

Strengths of ReefSense pH & Temperature Probe

  • High Precision & Accuracy: Very good pH and temperature specifications for a reef setup.

  • Integrated Design: Combines pH and temperature in one probe, saving space / ports.

  • Digital Signal: More reliable readings, less noise / signal drift.

  • Durability: Double ceramic junction improves probe life.

  • Smart Calibration: Probe “remembers” calibration — more flexible.

  • Bluetooth Support: Convenient for calibration / checks.

  • Full Ecosystem Integration: Works well with Red Sea’s ReefControl / ReefBeat for automation and monitoring.

Considerations of ReefSense pH & Temperature Probe

  • Cost: As a digital, high-precision probe it’s more expensive than a basic analog pH probe.

  • Calibration Required: Regular calibration is needed (depending on usage) to maintain accuracy.

  • Placement Matters: To get stable readings, the probe should be in a well-mixed area — not too close to local jets or strongly fluctuating temperature zones.

  • Drift Over Time: Though robust, pH probes will gradually drift, especially in saltwater; periodic cleaning / recalibration is required.

  • Bluetooth Range Limitations: Depending on where your sump / control cabinet is relative to where you mix water, the BLE signal may or may not reach comfortably.

  • Dependency on ReefControl System: To fully leverage the probe’s capabilities (automation, logging, alerts) you need to be using ReefControl + ReefBeat.

Summary

  • The ReefSense pH & Temperature Probe from Red Sea is a digital, accurate, and robust sensor for monitoring two of the most important parameters in a reef tank: pH and temperature.

  • It’s designed to integrate tightly with the ReefControl system (Lite or Pro) and the ReefBeat app, allowing you not only to monitor, but also to automate based on those readings.

  • With features like automatic temperature compensation, double-junction ceramic design, internal calibration memory, and Bluetooth-based remote calibration, it’s a very powerful tool for stable, data-driven reef keeping.
