Description
What Is the ReefSense ORP Probe?
The ReefSense ORP Probe is a digital oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) sensor made by Red Sea.
It is designed to connect to ReefControl controllers (Lite or Pro) in the ReefBeat ecosystem, enabling live ORP monitoring, data logging, alerts, and automation.
Because it’s digital, the probe is more immune to electromagnetic interference (EMI), common in reef systems (pumps, lights, etc.).
Specifications of ReefSense ORP Probe
Measurement & Accuracy
Measures ORP (in millivolts, mV) — this gives insight into water’s “oxidizing power” / redox state.
Accuracy: ±30 mV; Precision: 1 mV.
According to one source, its measurement range is from about –450 mV to +1100 mV, though typical reef ORP values are more narrow.
Probe Construction
Double-junction design: it has two external ceramic junctions, which improves longevity and reduces contamination.
The signal is digitized inside the probe, which helps maintain stable readings and avoids noise from long analog cables.
Calibration Memory
Calibration data is stored on the probe itself. When you recalibrate, the probe “remembers” its settings, even if you unplug it or move it to another ReefControl port.
This makes probe maintenance and swapping much more convenient.
Bluetooth / Remote Use
Supports remote use / calibration via Bluetooth (BLE) via the ReefBeat app.
This means you can remove it from the tank (e.g. to your sink or mixing station) for calibration or checking without needing to crouch next to your sump.
Integration with ReefControl & Automation
When connected to a ReefControl Lite or Pro, it provides:
Real-time ORP monitoring
Logging / historical data via the ReefBeat app
Notifications / alarms (if ORP goes outside user-defined thresholds)
With ReefControl Power, you can automate devices based on ORP: e.g., control an ozonizer (ozone generator) to maintain a target ORP level.
Robust Design for Reef Use
The double-ceramic junction construction helps resist fouling and prolongs probe life in saltwater.
Digitized signal reduces the risk of erroneous readings due to EMI.

Why It’s Useful to use ReefSense ORP Probe
Monitoring Water Quality: ORP is often used as a proxy for how “clean” or oxidizing the water is. A stable, reasonably high ORP can indicate good water quality.
Ozone Control: ORP is especially valuable if you're running an ozonizer: you can set a target ORP range in ReefBeat, and then automatically turn ozone on/off using ReefControl Power to maintain that level — helps avoid over-ozonation.
Alarm / Safety: Sudden drops in ORP may indicate issues (e.g., decaying matter, dead livestock, or other oxidative imbalances), and you can receive alerts when that happens.
Trend Analysis: By logging ORP data over time, you can see how water quality evolves (daily cycles, after maintenance, after dosing) and optimize accordingly.
Remote Maintenance: You can calibrate or check the probe remotely via Bluetooth — very handy for convenience and safety.
Strengths of ReefSense ORP Probe
High Precision & Accuracy: Very fine resolution (1 mV) with good stated accuracy for a hobby probe.
Digital Signal: Immune to analog noise, which improves stability in real-world reef setups.
Long Life: The double-ceramic junction design enhances durability.
Smart Calibration: Calibration history stored in the probe → flexible usage.
Automation Friendly: Can control ozonizers or other devices via ReefControl Power.
Integrated Ecosystem: Works seamlessly with ReefControl (Lite/Pro) and ReefBeat.
Remote Calibration: Bluetooth support makes life easier.
Considerations of ReefSense ORP Probe
Cost: Digital ORP probes like this are more expensive than basic analog probes.
Calibration Needed: To maintain reliable readings, regular calibration is needed with proper ORP standard solution.
Drift & Fouling: As with any ORP probe, deposits or biofilm can affect accuracy over time — cleaning / maintenance is required.
Placement: For good readings, the probe should be in a “representative” flow area, not too close to dosing nozzles or stagnant zones.
Dependency on ReefControl System: To fully leverage automation and logging, you need to be using ReefControl + ReefBeat.
Bluetooth Range: Depending on setup, BLE signal may be limited when the probe is deep in your sump or cabinet.
Summary
The ReefSense ORP Probe by Red Sea is a digital, high-precision ORP sensor made for reef aquariums, designed to integrate tightly with the ReefControl / ReefBeat system.
It provides real-time ORP measurements, data logging, alerts, and can even automate devices (like ozonizers) to maintain a target ORP level.
Its digital design (with internal signal conversion) and durable double-ceramic junction make it reliable and stable.
For reef keepers running ozone or wanting to track the oxidative capacity of their water, it's a very powerful tool — though it comes with maintenance needs and is most useful when used within Red Sea’s automation ecosystem.
