Description
REEFER 225 micron Felt filterbag – Red Sea
The 225-micron felt filter bag from Red Sea (sometimes called a felt filter sock) is a reusable mechanical filtration device meant for saltwater reef (and freshwater) aquarium systems, especially Red Sea’s REEFER and MAX-S lines.
It uses a felt material with 225 micron pore size to catch medium-sized particles—uneaten food, debris, detritus—before they move further into the filtration chain, helping improve water clarity and reduce load on skimmers, bio-filters, and other media.
Details for REEFER 225 micron Felt filterbag – Red Sea
Material: The bag is made from a synthetic felt material (often polyester or another durable fibre) that’s thick enough to trap debris inside its wall, not just on the surface. The felt structure allows particles to embed somewhat into the walls of the material.
Pore size / micron rating: 225 microns. That is, the felt is designed to filter out particles larger than approximately 225 microns. Smaller particles will pass through.
Dimensions: Length is about 26 cm (≈ 10.5 inches), diameter is roughly 10 cm (≈ 4 inches), fitting standard “4-inch” filter ring holders.
Structure / Wall thickness: Because it’s felt, the wall is relatively thick, allowing deeper filtration (i.e. particles entering into the bulk of the material). This thickness contributes to trapping particles more deeply, though also slows flow more than mesh of equal micron rating.
Seams / ring / holder fit: The top of the felt sock is reinforced to allow insertion into standard filter sock holders, especially those used in Red Sea REEFER and MAX-S systems. It usually includes a ring (plastic or similar) to keep shape and fit.
Reusability: The felt bags are intended to be reusable. With proper cleaning, they can be used multiple times. Over time, felt may degrade (fibres break down, holes may develop, compaction reduces capacity), but the design is for ongoing use.

REEFER 225 micron Felt filterbag – Red Sea
- Water flows into the sock, through the felt material. Debris is caught within the felt walls (not just on the surface), so the filtration is both surface & depth filtration.
As debris builds up, flow is impeded; the felt gets loaded. This reduces flow (pressure drop) and may require cleaning.
Because the micron size is moderately coarse compared to “fine polish” bags (like 100 micron), the frequency of cleaning is lower; the felt 225-micron is considered “for regular, day-to-day use.”
Advantages:
Good compromise between trapping medium debris and allowing decent flow (i.e. not clogging too fast).
Helps reduce load before finer filters or skimmers, improving overall system efficiency.
Relatively durable, reusable, and cost-effective over time vs disposable or very fine filters.
Fits existing infrastructure in Red Sea systems, and many standard 4-inch ring holders.
Limitations:
Because of felt’s thickness, it will drop flow faster than thin mesh when loaded. Needs regular cleaning to prevent flow issues.
Will let through finer particles; so not suitable if you want very fine polishing of water. For that, 100 micron felt or other finer media are needed.
Over time, felt may degrade, compress, or lose effectiveness (holes, thinning) especially if cleaned harshly.
Less durable vs thin-mesh in some cleaning regimes (felt fibres can break off).
