Description

What Is the ReefControl ATO Module by Red Sea?

The ReefControl ATO Module is an Auto-Top-Off (ATO) add-on designed for the Red Sea ReefControl ecosystem. It provides automated water replenishment to compensate for evaporation, helping maintain stable water levels and salinity in a reef aquarium.

It’s specifically made to plug into ReefControl Lite or Pro controllers, so you don’t need a separate ATO controller.

Technical Specs of ReefControl ATO Module

Here are the main features and technical details of the module:

  1. Digital Level Sensor + Temperature Probe

    • Uses EC (electrical conductivity) technology via titanium probes.

    • Solid-state (no moving float), which leads to more reliability.

    • Built-in digital temperature sensor with 0.1 °C accuracy.

    • Provides real-time monitoring, logs, and can send alerts via the ReefBeat app.

  2. Pump

    • 12 V DC, variable flow.

    • Power draw: 6–10 W.

    • Maximum flow rate: 300 L/h (≈ 75 gph).

    • Maximum head (lift): 2.5 m.

    • Compact size: diameter ~ 4.5 cm (1.8″).

    • Serviceable: the pump is designed to be maintained / cleaned.

  3. Installation Kit
The module comes with everything you need for a clean installation:

    • Sensor holder + a magnetic corner bracket (for glass up to 12 mm)

    • Silicone tubing (3 m / 10′, ID 5 mm)

    • Tube holder that clips to the tank glass (for 4–12 mm glass)

    • Check valve / anti-siphon (“anti-reverse”) to prevent backflow.

  4. Integration with ReefControl / ReefBeat

    • Direct plug-in to ReefControl Lite or Pro – no separate ATO controller is required.

    • Through the ReefBeat app, you can:

      • Monitor water level in real time

      • Check temperature logs

      • Receive alerts (e.g., if level is too low or pump runs too long)

    • Can be configured (especially when used with ReefControl Power) to trigger other equipment: e.g., use level or temperature readings to control DC devices (fans) or AC devices (heaters).

Why Use ReefControl ATO Module

  • Stability & Safety: Automatically maintains water level, which helps prevent salinity swings caused by evaporation.

  • Reliability: Solid-state sensor (no moving parts) is less prone to failure than float switches.

  • Precision: High-accuracy temperature sensing can help with more nuanced monitoring.

  • Connected Monitoring: With ReefBeat integration, you get real-time visibility, history logs, and notifications — very useful for serious reef keepers.

  • Modular & Expandable: Fits into the broader ReefControl system; if you're already using ReefControl Lite or Pro, it's a natural add-on.

Things to Consider when using ReefControl ATO Module

  • Cost: As a “smart” ATO, it's likely more expensive than basic float-valve-based systems.

  • Pump Power: While 300 L/h is decent, very large ATO reservoirs or setups with high lift might push the pump; check whether 2.5 m head is enough for your use.

  • Setup Complexity: While plug-and-play for ReefControl users, it’s still a more advanced setup than a simple float valve; you’ll need to properly install the sensor, tubing, and configure via the app.

  • Maintenance: Preventative maintenance (cleaning the sensor) is commonly recommended.

When It’s Especially Useful

  • Evaporation Management: Best for reef tanks where evaporation is significant, as consistent top-off ensures salinity stays stable.

  • Remote Monitoring: If you’re away or don’t check your sump frequently, this module can warn you via the app if the ATO pump fails or if levels get weird.

  • Redundant or “Smart” Systems: For hobbyists who already use ReefControl and have automation, this integrates ATO into the same system rather than using separate hardware.

  • Compact Setups: Since the pump is small and the sensor is slim, it's useful in tight RO/DI jerrycans or small sumps.

  • Failure Protection: Use the notifications to detect if something goes wrong (pump running too long, no water in reservoir, etc.), helping prevent overflows or dry-run damage.
