RO-resin cartridge Aqua Medic

The Aqua Medic RO-Resin Cartridge is a mixed-bed ion exchange resin cartridge designed to provide final polishing of water downstream of a reverse osmosis (RO) system — particularly in configurations like the Platinum Line Plus. Its main job is to remove the last traces of unwanted ions (such as silicates, nitrates and similar) that remain after RO filtration, helping produce very clean, near-ion-free water.

It also includes a colour-indicator resin: the resin changes colour (from blue to green) when its capacity is nearing exhaustion, signaling that replacement is needed.

Benefits of RO-resin cartridge by Aqua Medic

  • Helps reduce or prevent diatom growth in aquaria by removing silicates — a common cause of diatom blooms.

  • Removes trace nitrates and other ions that RO membranes may not fully capture.

  • Visual feedback (colour change) so you can see when the resin is used up; no guesswork.

  • Good capacity of resin (~ 600 ml) so it lasts a reasonable time under moderate to high usage.

Composition

  • The resin is a mixed bed demineraliser, composed of both cation- and anion-exchange resin beads.

  • Specifically:

    • A styrene-divinylbenzene copolymer with trialkylammonium groups in OH-form (for anion exchange)

    • A styrene-divinylbenzene copolymer with sulfonic acid groups (in H-form) for cation exchange.

How It Works the RO-resin cartridge

  • After water exits the RO membrane and earlier filtration steps, it passes through this resin cartridge as the final stage. This “polishing” stage removes remaining ions that the membrane may not fully eliminate.

  • As water passes through, ions (e.g. leftover cations and anions) are exchanged with OH- or H- forms on the resin beads. Over time, the exchange sites fill up, and ion breakthrough begins.

  • The resin’s built-in colour indicator allows you to see when the resin is becoming exhausted: when the conductivity or “cleanliness” of the water starts declining (i.e. ions are getting through), the resin changes colour (blue → green) to show it needs replacing.

Maintenance & Replacement

  • The resin is disposable, not rechargeable. Once exhausted, you replace the cartridge.

  • Monitor the quality of product water (TDS, conductivity) — when these begin rising (i.e. more ions are getting through), it's a sign the resin has reached end of life.

  • Regular replacement ensures consistent ultrapure water and helps prevent diatom/algae issues in marine setups.

Safety & Handling

  • Because of the chemical nature of the resins used, some caution is needed:

    • Handling gloves and eye protection are recommended.

    • If resin contacts eyes, wash carefully; if swallowed or ingested, medical attention may be needed.

  • Dispose of used resin according to local regulations (hazardous waste where applicable).
