Hailea HC series liquid chillers
The Hailea HC 500-A Chiller
The Hailea HC 500-A is a medium-to-high capacity water chiller built to deliver good cooling performance for aquariums or hydroponic systems. It offers a balance of power, precision, and robust construction, making it well suited for serious hobbyists or small commercial setups.
Design & Build Quality
The HC 500-A is built with a strong metal/chassis housing and a contemporary design aesthetic. It’s intended to look good and remain durable even in demanding or visible installations.
It uses environmentally friendlier refrigerant R-134a, which is standard in many such chillers to reduce environmental impact.
The heat exchanger / evaporator is made of pure titanium, ensuring excellent corrosion resistance. This allows use with both fresh water and salt water without rapid degradation.
It features a digital temperature controller/display with fine resolution (in many instances 0.1 °C), letting the user set and monitor desired water temperatures accurately.
The design considers noise and durability: lowered noise output compared to older models, robust build to handle continuous operation, and features like auto-restart after power outage in some listings.
Technical Specs
The HC 500-A is powered by a ½-horsepower (HP) compressor. It is designed to cool aquarium or hydroponic systems generally up to 500 litres, although in some cases manufacturers suggest ranges broader (200-1,200 L) depending on heat load.
For optimal cooling, the recommended water flow through the unit is between 1,200 and 3,000 litres per hour. This ensures sufficient circulation to allow the heat exchanger to perform well.
Current draw is listed around 2.4 A (50 Hz) under normal conditions, though some sources list a higher peak or “starting” current (e.g. 4.4 A) depending on load.
Weight is about 22 kilograms, and the outer dimensions are approximately 475 × 360 × 490 mm (Length × Width × Height).
Cooling capacity, in some listings, is given around 790 W.
It has connectors for water in/out tubing (hosetails) of ~20-22 mm diameter in many listings.
Advantages of using Hailea HC 500-A
Good power for its size: The HC-500-A is sufficiently powerful to keep water temperature stable even under moderate heat input (lights, ambient temperature).
Titanium heat exchanger: Resistant to corrosion—particularly important for marine/saltwater aquaria. This improves longevity.
Precision temperature control: Because of its digital controller and fine resolution, it can maintain stable thermal conditions, which is critical for sensitive organisms.
Durable and continuous use: Designed for continuous operation and built with robust materials, making it appropriate for demanding applications.
Fairly efficient relative to capacity: With recommended flow rates and proper installation, it provides a good level of cooling without excessively high power draw compared to much larger chillers.
Things to Watch Out For
Power / running cost: Even though it’s not among the largest chillers, under heavy load or high ambient temperature it will run often and may draw significant electricity.
Proper sizing and thermal load: If your aquarium or hydroponic setup has very high heat input (strong lighting, poor insulation, high ambient temperature), this model may be pushed near its limits. Oversizing safety margin is recommended.
Flow requirement: The chiller needs a pump and plumbing that can provide ~1,200-3,000 L/h; if flow is less, performance drops and cooling will be less effective.
Noise, space, and ventilation: While it’s quieter than older units, it still generates noise and needs space for air intake and exhaust. Poor ventilation will reduce efficiency and may cause overheating of the compressor or associated components.
Initial cost vs lower models: If your setup is significantly smaller, this model may be more expensive than needed; sometimes a smaller chiller may suffice.
Ideal Use Cases
The HC-500-A works very well in situations such as:
Medium aquariums (reef tanks or freshwater) in the ~300-500 L range where stability is important, especially in warm climates or under strong lighting.
Hydroponic setups where water temperature must be kept within precise bounds, especially in summer or in enclosed grow spaces.
Systems where the chiller can be placed in a well-ventilated technical room (to reduce perceived noise and allow heat dissipation).
Users who want durability (titanium, solid build) and who expect regular, long-term usage rather than occasional seasonal cooling.
