Description

Coral Pellets 100g – Ocean Nutrition

Coral Pellets 100g by Ocean Nutrition are a semi-moist pellet food created especially for feeding stony and fleshy corals (especially LPS, but also suitable for many other corals).

They are meant to simplify coral feeding by offering a convenient “ready-to-use” format that corals can grasp and digest, instead of relying only on powdered or liquid foods.

Ocean Nutrition offers these pellets in two size variants: ~2.5 mm for smaller polyps / smaller LPS or Ricordea, and ~6 mm for larger LPS corals.

Ingredients of Coral Pellets 100g

The pellets are formulated with a mix of marine and planktonic ingredients, for a more natural diet accessible to corals. According to manufacturer data, ingredients include:

  • Marine copepods

  • Fish fillets

  • Krill

  • Wheat flour & gluten

  • Squid

  • Adult brine shrimp

  • Mineral salts

  • Marine fish eggs

  • Yeast

  • Mussels

  • Vitamins (A, D3, C, E, K3, B-complex) and antioxidants

Composition Figures

  • Protein: ~ 35.0 %

  • Fat: ~ 8.0 %

  • Fiber (max): ~ 1.0 %

  • Ash: ~ 8.0 %

  • Moisture (semi-moist): ~ 25.0 %

Because the pellets are semi-moist, they contain a relatively high moisture percentage compared to fully dried foods, which influences their texture and digestibility.

Characteristics

  • Semi-Moist / Soft Texture: The pellets are soft and semi-moist, making them easier for coral polyps to grasp, ingest, and digest compared to hard pellets.

  • Sinking Pellets: They sink, which helps them reach corals on the substrate or lower positions in the tank, instead of floating away.

  • Nitrogen-Flushed Packaging: The inner foil pouch is flushed with nitrogen, which helps exclude oxygen and preserve freshness and reduce oxidation over time.

  • Two Size Options: As mentioned, you can choose either 2.5 mm or 6 mm depending on coral polyp size / species.

Feeding Guidelines

  • Feeding Frequency: It is recommended to feed every other day (i.e. not daily).

  • Portion / Volume: To reduce risk of overfeeding, the guidance is to feed a maximum of 30% of the polyps in a coral colony at one feeding event.

  • Storage Advice:
     - Store the sealed product at room temperature before opening.
     - After opening, refrigeration (≈ 4–6 °C) is recommended to maintain freshness and slow degradation.
     - Avoid moisture ingress into packaging during use (i.e. avoid wet utensils / condensation inside the package) to prevent spoilage.

Advantages of using Coral Pellets 100g

  • Ease & Convenience: Since the pellets are ready-to-use (no mixing, dissolving, etc.), feeding becomes simpler.

  • High Acceptability: The soft/semi-moist structure improves acceptance by corals (they can grab and hold onto pellets more readily).

  • Feeding Stimulation: The pellets include selected molecules / attractants that help stimulate feeding response (polyps extend, etc.)

  • Tailored to Polyp Size: Having two pellet size options allows better matching to the coral species you have (small LPS vs large LPS) so feeding is more efficient.

  • Reduced Waste / Drift: Because they sink and are semi-moist, less is likely to drift or float away compared to some flake or powdered feeds, improving feeding efficiency.

Considerations

  • Even though semi-moist, these pellets still release some moisture / dissolved matter; overfeeding or leaving uneaten pellets for long may degrade water quality (ammonia, nitrates) if filtration / skimming isn’t managed properly.

  • Because the pellets are soft, in high flow or turbulent currents they may break apart or disintegrate too quickly, reducing feeding efficiency.

  • Matching pellet size matters: Using too large a pellet for small-polyp corals may be wasted or inaccessible; too small for larger corals may not provide sufficient “bite.”

  • The shelf life after opening is limited; careful storage (cold, dry, sealed) is necessary to prevent spoilage or nutrient loss.

  • The 30% polyps guideline is important — overfeeding can lead to excess detritus and water parameter issues.
