Description
Formula Two Flakes 34g – Ocean Nutrition
Formula Two Flakes 34g from Ocean Nutrition is a gourmet flake food designed especially for herbivorous and omnivorous tropical fish, both marine and (to some extent) freshwater.
Formula Two Flakes it includes extra algae, marine ingredients, and plant matter to more closely mimic a natural diet for fish that rely on vegetation or algae in the wild.
Ingredients of Formula Two Flakes 34g
The Formula Two Flakes is a balanced mix of marine and plant-derived nutrients, including:
Dried fish protein digest, salmon
Wheat gluten, wheat flour, wheat starch
Fish meal
Algae meal, kelp, dried kelp
Plankton
Salmon eggs, mussels, brine shrimp
Garlic, spirulina
Lecithin, fish oil
Marigold (for pigment)
Vitamins and minerals: choline chloride, magnesium sulfate, iron, zinc, manganese, biotin, vitamin E, vitamin C, vitamin A, B-vitamins, iodine, etc.
Preservatives / stabilizers: citric acid (as preservative)
(No artificial colors or artificial preservatives claimed)
This blend aims to provide both animal and plant sources of nutrition, especially favoring foods that herbivorous/omnivorous fish can digest.
Guaranteed Analysis according to Ocean Nutrition:
Crude Protein (minimum): 50.3%
Crude Fat (minimum): 15.7%
Crude Fiber (maximum): 0.2%
Moisture (maximum): 6.5%
Ash (maximum): 4.5%
Phosphorus (minimum): 0.6%
These metrics show a relatively high protein and fat content for a flake intended in part for herbivory, meaning fish get both energy and structural nutrients.
Feeding Guidelines
Feed 1 to 3 times per day, offering only what the fish can consume in about 2–5 minutes (depending on stock and species).
If uneaten flakes remain after the feeding window, remove them to prevent water quality degradation.
The flakes are designed to be easily digested and to produce less waste, helping to keep aquarium water cleaner.
Because they are dry flake foods, they float initially or remain suspended; they should not cloud the water when used properly.
Compatibility
This flake formula is ideal for fish that naturally consume algae, plant material, or a mixed diet:
Marine species such as Tangs, Rabbitfish, Pygmy Angels, Chromis, Damsels, Parrots, Clowns, Marine Angels, etc.
Also usable for invertebrates (e.g. crabs, shrimp, sea cucumbers, sea stars, urchins) that accept flakes.
Some freshwater omnivorous or herbivorous species might also use it, although its marine orientation may make other flake foods more optimal in mixed freshwater setups.
Advantages of Formula Two Flakes
Algae-rich formulation: The inclusion of marine algae, kelp, and spirulina helps support herbivorous feeding habits and provides plant-based nutrition.
High palatability: Use of garlic and marine ingredients helps encourage feeding in picky eaters.
Aids coloration & vitality: Pigments such as marigold and high nutrient density support vibrant colors and general health.
Digestibility / low waste: Because the formula is easier to digest, it produces less waste, which helps reduce pollutant load in the aquarium.
No artificial preservatives or colors (per the brand claim).
Versatility: Usable for a wide variety of herbivorous / omnivorous fish species.
Considerations
Competition of diets: For fish that are strict carnivores, this flake may lack sufficient levels of high-grade animal protein or stimulate less interest. It may need to be supplemented with meaty frozen diets.
Overfeeding risk: Even though it is more digestible than many flake foods, overfeeding will still cause leftover flakes to decay, raise ammonia/nitrite/nitrate levels, and degrade water quality.
Storage & moisture sensitivity: Flakes must be stored in a sealed, dry container. Exposure to humidity, air, or heat after opening may cause them to deteriorate, lose nutrient potency, or get moldy.
Feeding competition & size: In heavily stocked tanks, dominant fish may consume most flakes before smaller, more timid species can reach them. Also, flakes may not sink well for bottom feeders, so some fish may not get access.
Nutrient balancing: While rich, no single food is perfect. A varied diet (pellets, frozen, live foods) is often needed to ensure all vitamins, trace minerals, and nutritional needs are met.
Initial acceptance: Newly introduced or picky fish may hesitate to eat the flakes; mixing with familiar foods or soaking them may help during transition.
