Spirulina Flakes 34g – Ocean Nutrition
Spirulina Flakes from Ocean Nutrition are a dry flake food formulated for both freshwater and marine tropical fish. The idea is to provide a high-quality herbivorous / omnivorous staple diet.
Key intended uses:
As a staple / regular diet for fish that require plant material (or that benefit from algae / spirulina in their diet)
To support coloration, health, vitality, and digestion in fish
To act as a nutritious base food that can be complemented with other diets (meaty foods, frozen, etc.)
Ingredients of Spirulina Flakes 34g
The list of ingredients includes:
Fish meal
Spirulina (blue-green algae)
Pollock
Dried kelp
Wheat flour & wheat starch
Chlorella
Lecithin
Probiotic bacterial cultures (e.g. Bacillus sp., Pediococcus, Enterococcus, Lactobacillus)
Betaine
Fish oil
Yeast
Algae, brine shrimp, kelp meal
Vitamins & minerals (A, D3, C, E, K3, B-complex, etc.)
Antioxidants, trace minerals (iron, manganese, zinc, etc.)
Other supporting compounds (e.g. choline chloride, inositol)
Nutrients
Crude Protein (min.): 45.6 %
Crude Fat (min.): 10.8 %
Crude Fiber (max.): 3.1 %
Moisture (max.): 8.1 %
Ash (max.): 7.0 %
Phosphorus (min.): 0.7 %
Microorganisms (probiotics): 24,000,000 cfu/g at time of manufacture (i.e. beneficial bacteria count)
Characteristics
Probiotic Enrichment: The flakes come “now with probiotics” — beneficial bacteria are added to help support gut health, improve digestion, and bolster immune systems in fish.
Does Not Cloud the Water: They are designed / formulated so they don’t cause excessive turbidity in the aquarium when used appropriately.
Soft / Flaky Texture: The flake form is more readily ingested by many fish species (compared to hard pellets) and helps ensure better digestibility.
Color-Enhancing Pigments: Because spirulina and other algae contain natural pigments (e.g. carotenoids, beta-carotene, astaxanthin), these flakes help support and enhance fish coloration.
Dual Use (Freshwater & Marine): It is suitable for use in both freshwater and marine tropical fish systems.
Feeding Guidelines
Feeding Rate & Frequency: Feed one to three times daily, but in amounts that can be consumed in ~5 minutes (or similar short window). Do not overfeed.
Appropriate Species: Suitable for most freshwater and marine herbivorous / omnivorous fish species — tangs, angelfish, blennies, plecos, etc.
Complementary Feeding: Best when used in combination with other flake foods (or meaty foods) to provide a balanced diet. Some retailers recommend combining with a “Formula Two Flakes” or other complimentary flake food.
Storage: Keep in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight, and ensure the container is tightly sealed to preserve freshness and prevent moisture ingress.
Advantages
Supports Coloration: The presence of spirulina and other pigments helps fish maintain and intensify their natural colors.
Digestibility & Health: The probiotic content and soft texture aid digestion, gut balance, and general vitality.
Balanced Nutrition: Good protein, fats, and micronutrients make it a viable staple rather than just a supplement.
Versatility: Being suitable for both freshwater and marine systems is convenient for hobbyists with mixed systems or hybrid setups.
Low Water Impact: Because it’s designed not to cloud water (when dosed properly), risk of fouling water is reduced compared to other foods.
Considerations
Overfeeding Risk: As with any feed, excessive amounts or frequent overfeeding can lead to leftover food, nutrient spikes (ammonia, nitrates), and water quality issues.
Not a Complete Diet Alone: While good, it should not be the only food — many fish also need protein, meaty items, or specific supplements that spirulina flakes may not fully provide.
Shelf Life / Freshness: Once opened, exposure to air, humidity, heat can degrade the quality (oxidation, microbial changes). Proper storage is essential.
Species Suitability: Some strict carnivores may not accept it, or may not derive enough from it. It works best for those that include algae/plant matter in their diet.
Variable Nutrient Demand: In high-demand systems (e.g. fast-growing fish, breeding, juvenile stages), supplementary high-protein or live foods may still be needed.
