Description

Formula One Flakes 34g – Ocean Nutrition

Formula One Flakes 34g from Ocean Nutrition is a premium flake food designed for carnivorous and omnivorous marine tropical fish.

Formula One Flakes it’s intended to mimic aspects of a natural marine diet by incorporating a high inclusion of seafood ingredients and offering a balanced mix of animal and marine-sourced nutrients.

Ingredients

The formula contains a rich blend that emphasizes marine proteins and functional ingredients:

  • Dried fish protein digest, salmon, fish meal, plankton, mussels, brine shrimp, adult brine shrimp, fish fillets, krill, squid, and marine fish eggs.

  • Algae / marine plant inputs such as kelp, marine algae, spirulina.

  • Wheat-based binders: wheat gluten, wheat flour, wheat starch.

  • Functional & additive ingredients: lecithin, garlic, yeast, selective amino acids, vitamins, minerals, carotenoid pigments (e.g. annatto)

  • Preservatives & stabilizers: e.g. citric acid, antioxidants.

Guaranteed Nutrients of Formula One Flakes

Ocean Nutrition provides these guaranteed numbers for Formula One Flakes:

  • Crude Protein (minimum): 55.3%

  • Crude Fat (minimum): 15.8%

  • Crude Fiber (maximum): 0.8%

  • Moisture (maximum): 8.0%

  • Ash (maximum): 4.3%

  • Phosphorus (minimum): 0.6%

Feeding

  • Recommended feeding is 1 to 3 times daily, giving only what the fish can consume within about five minutes.

  • You should not overfeed — uneaten flakes should be removed to prevent water quality issues.

  • The flakes are claimed to be easily digestible, thereby producing less waste, which helps maintain clearer water in aquaria.

  • Ocean Nutrition also claims that the flakes do not cloud the water when used properly.

Compatibility

Formula One Flakes is appropriate for a wide variety of marine tropical carnivores/omnivores. Some examples given include:

  • Angels, Anthias, Basslets, Blennies, Butterflies, Cardinals, Clowns, Chromis, Gobies, Puffers, Pseudochromis, Wrasses

  • Also usable by small crustaceans like crabs and shrimps that will accept flake inputs.

Because of its higher protein profile, this flake formula is more targeted toward fish that demand animal / marine protein — less so for strict herbivores.

Advantages of using Formula One Flakes

  • High nutritional intensity: The high protein and fat content make it more suitable as a staple or near-staple diet for protein-demanding species.

  • Good palatability: Seafood-based ingredients and attractants make it appealing to many fish.

  • Color and vitality support: Pigments and marine-derived ingredients help maintain vibrant coloration and overall health.

  • Reduced waste and water impact: Because digestion is efficient, less undigested material remains, reducing pollution in the aquarium.

  • No artificial colors/preservatives (as claimed) and stable water clarity when dosed properly.

Considerations

  • Storage & freshness: Though flakes are generally more stable than moist pellets, exposure to humidity, oxygen, or high temperature after opening can degrade quality, reduce potency of vitamins, or lead to spoilage.

  • Overfeeding risk: As with any flake food, feeding more than fish can consume leads to leftover flakes that decompose, increasing ammonia, nitrites/nitrates, and possibly fueling algae.

  • Diet limitations for herbivores: This formula leans toward animal protein; herbivorous species may benefit more from algae/plant-rich diets.

  • Competition / access: In mixed or aggressive tanks, dominant fish might consume most flakes before shy or slower feeders get to them. Also, flake particles may float or drift and may not reach bottom-feeders effectively.

  • Nutritional completeness: Even high-grade flakes may not supply every micronutrient or behavioral feeding stimulus — many aquarists rotate in frozen, live, or pellet foods as complements.

  • Initial acceptance: Fish used to other food forms may be slow to accept the flakes; gradual transition or mixing with familiar food may help.
